ACTIVITIES TO IMPROVE SAFETY AND RESCUE PROCEDURES

Since Aureet' tragic accident, the Bar-Yam family initiated many activities aimed at the improvement of public safety in order to prevent future tragedies. It is the belief of the Bar-Yams and their friends who have participated in the following activities that there is an urgent need to improve the training of public officials, expand the use of rescue equipment and upgrade the implementation of rescue procedures not only in Lincoln but in many other towns in the region.

• Meeting with Lincoln officials : police and firemen - January 1991.

• Meetings with witnesses to find out the facts of the accident - January 1991.

• Meetings with Lincoln Selectmen - January, February, March, April, May 1991.

• Donation by Steven Hassan of a cold water rescue suit to the town of Lincoln to improve their rescue capabilities - January 1991

• Meeting with DeCordova employees regarding the accident. - January 1991

• Establishment of the committee of Citizens for Public Safety and Rescue (CPSR) - January 1991.

• Participation in training of public officials run by specialists on ice rescue - February, March, October, November 1991.

• Meetings with several senators and congressmen regarding changes in the laws pertaining to public safety and rescue training - March 1991.

• Meeting with the Assistant to the Governor of Massachusetts regarding actions to prevent similar accidents - March 1991.

• Meetings with District attorney regarding the investigation of Lincoln rescue procedures - March, April, May 1991.

• Participation in a fair and exhibition and fair of safety equipment - March 1991

• Meeting with the Director of Criminal Justice Training (police training) - April 1991.

• Meeting with the Assistant to the State Attorney General regarding the investigation of public rescue procedures - April 1991

• (The Commissioner for Public Safety refused to meet with us)

• Participation in the Mutts and Stuff day of the Mass. Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals with a booth on safety with animals - September 1991

• Appearance on television in a program People Are Talking regarding issues of public safety and rescue. - April 1992

• Participation in meetings of the Lexington Selectmen on the investigation of the officials response to a call for help - September 1992

• Testimony before a State house committee on issues of training firemen in ice water rescue procedures - April 1993.

• Meetings, phone conversations, letters and Faxes to experts on Public Safety and Water Training in Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Canada, Colorado, California, Sweden.

• Contacts with people dealing with safety equipment including the inventor of an inflatable ramp and pontoons for rescue purposes.

• Negotiations with the town of Lincoln regarding improvements in their training and use of rescue equipment; compiling material about requirements to meet minimal safety standards -  Ongoing.

• Organizing and sponsoring a 3 day intensive ice and cold water rescue training program for police and firefighters from towns across Massachusetts. About 30 rescue personnel were trained and licensed by Dive Rescue International of Colorado as trainers that will create teams of rescuers throughout the State - March 1994.
